Wind the clock back to January 27, 1866, and see people walking Hokitika's streets with the surname Tauwhare, Frost, Pritchard, Balfour, Moody, Weatherall, Shepard and Staines. Kiwi author Eleanor Catton's Man Booker winning novel, The Luminaries, is filled with the intertwining lives of 20 characters during the West Coast town's gold rush heyday of 1866 and 1867. Earlier this month, life was unexpectedly injected into her novel's pages during her first visit to Hokitika since the book was published. While at An Evening with Eleanor Catton at Hokitika's Regent Theatre, she confided to the 460-strong audience that the only character's surname she deliberately selected was Tauwhare. She named Arahura Valley greenstone hunter Te Rau Tauwhare, his surname a real Poutini Ngai Tahu name of the era and meaning "House of Years", which suited her book's astrological theme. During her stay, she met locals who shared surnames with the characters from her book at a powhiri on the Arahura Marae, near Hokitika, which she said was "trippy". Arahura kaumatua Ned Tauwhare later said he was surprised to discover his family name in the book and said he was related to Piripi, Ria and Inia Tauwhare, who lived at Arahura Marae in 1866. Catton's visit prompted many locals to have a closer look to see if their family names appeared in the 832-page book. "I'm delighted," said Hokitika 70-year-old Bernard Preston about his family's link. His great-grandfather, Henry Staines, lived at Kaniere, near Hokitika, in the 1860s and was a gold miner. He died there in 1907, aged 78. His son, John Staines, was the Empire Hotel's proprietor at Kaniere in the late 1890s. In the book, Emery Staines was also a gold miner. Also, Preston's aunt was called Frances Wells, similar to Francis Wells, the pseudonym that character Francis Carver took in the novel. He told Catton of his pedigree during question time at the Regent Theatre event. She said she did most of her research while she lived overseas, aided by online newspaper archives from the National Library of New Zealand. It was possible she stumbled on those names during her early name hunt "and they just kind of stayed", she said. Fairfax researched online records of The West Coast Times in the 1860s and discovered others who lived in Hokitika back then with the same surnames as Catton's fictional characters. Banker Charlie Frost: Two brothers, Robert and William Frost, lived in the Arahura area in 1866. Robert Frost put numerous advertisements in the newspaper in November and December 1866, seeking his brother, William. In May 1869, a case from the Resident Magistrate's Court revealed William Frost had been assaulted in the upper Arahura and his brother, Robert, was a witness. Chemist Joseph Pritchard: Records showed Pritchard and Galloway was the name of a drapers shop in Revell-street in Hokitika in 1865, which later was called Pritchard and Co. In 1868, a court case in the Resident Magistrate's Court was against someone who damaged Albert Pritchard's fence, the "owner of certain premises on Revell-street". Alfred Chas Pritchard was named as an arbitrator in a Hokitika case in 1868. The following year, the newspaper's shipping column noted the arrival from Melbourne to Hokitika of a Mrs AP Pritchard and child, Mrs AC Pritchard and children plus Mr AC Pritchard. Many other Pritchards were mentioned in newspaper archives into the early 1900s in Hokitika. Shipping agent Thomas Balfour: Scottish civil engineer James Melville Balfour came to New Zealand in 1863 and was based in Dunedin, becoming New Zealand's colonial marine engineer in 1866. He spent time in Hokitika in about 1886 assessing its port as part of his review of the West Coast's ports. "In his evidence before the Select Committee on the Westland petition, Mr Balfour gave information as to the rivers and harbours of the West Coast, with reference especially to the port of Hokitika, which he says he was sent down two years ago to inspect," a newspaper excerpt said in late 1867. Balfour drowned in December 1869, aged 38, when a small boat capsized while attempting to reach a sailing vessel outside Timaru's port in rough seas. His widow, Christina, went back to the United Kingdom and remarried. Their only child, Marie Clothilde Balfour, also headed back to the UK, married and became a well-known author. Gold miner wannabe Walter Moody and prostitute Anna Wetherall: Emma Moody, eldest daughter of Hokitika produce merchant John Moody and his wife, Ann Weatherall, married James Cropper in Hokitika in 1869. Two years later, the Moodys' other daughter, Mary Ann Moody, married William Homes in All Saints Church in Hokitika. She is buried in Hokitika cemetery. In 1871, a Supreme Court case mentioned John and Ann Moody as Hokitika-based witnesses. Jailer George Shepard: In 1867, the wife of a W Shepard gave birth to a son in Park St, Hokitika. Shepard was a Cobb and Co coach driver and that same year, he appealed to the Provincial Council for compensation after he was badly injured while driving the coach through Hokitika. 25 March 2014, Abu Dhabi, United Arab Emirates - TAQA, the international energy and water company from Abu Dhabi, today announced its annual audited results for 2013. Basic earnings per share (AED)0.11(0. Net Debt/EBITDA (times)5.75. TAQA's underlying revenues, cash flow and earnings all saw an improvement in a year of resilient operational performance. Underlying revenues grew 3% year-on-year to AED 21.1 billion, and the business continued to generate strong operational cash flows, with EBITDA rising 1% to AED 13.4 billion. The net result was affected by a one-off, non-cash impairment related to the value of the company's North American oil and gas assets. The company continues to enjoy a strong financial position, with high levels of liquidity, and has planned capital expenditure in excess of USD 2 billion in 2014. The power and water segment, the bedrock of TAQA's business, continued to produce a strong revenue and earnings stream, while oil and gas recovered from a setback in the UK early in the year to end the year on a high note with record production levels. The company hit key milestones on its large construction and growth projects, with several new facilities poised to come on stream over the next 18 months in the Netherlands, Morocco, Ghana and Iraq. In the UK North Sea, TAQA successfully integrated the Harding platform and associated assets, which provides the company with a development portfolio across three fields that will extend the life and sustainability of the existing business in the UK. In Q4, UK production levels were a record 68,400 barrels of oil equivalent per day (boed), compared with 39,500 boed during the same period in 2012, an increase of 73%. In North America, TAQA effected a turnaround. The business was restructured, reducing headcount by 162, disposing of non-core acreage and creating a simpler organisation. A more focused capital spending programme centred around the company's highest-value prospects has already started to generate higher production, while maintaining an industry-leading safety performance. In Iraq, TAQA secured regulatory approval for the development plan of the Atrush field, with the first oil production expected in 2015. In the power and water segment, underlying revenues grew by 5% to AED 9.0 billion, led by a strong performance of TAQA's majority ownership of the UAE power and water fleet. TAQA made great progress in its largest growth and construction projects. The first of two new units at the Jorf Lasfar Energy Company power plant in Morocco, where TAQA already provides about 40% of the country's power, synchronised to the grid in October, and the second unit is due for commissioning in the first half of 2014. The successful IPO of the Moroccan business on the Casablanca stock exchange in December raised significant funds for TAQA and added a critical new stakeholder base for the company. In Ghana, the company passed the half way mark in its expansion of the Takoradi 2 power plant, which is set to increase electricity production by 50% with a highly efficient combined cycle unit. Construction of the Bergermeer gas storage plant in the Netherlands reached an advanced stage, with the start of preliminary operations on schedule for April 2014. When this project is complete in 2015, it will be the largest open access gas storage facility in Europe, significantly contributing to Europe's energy security. TAQA's financing operations continued to set a benchmark for the region, with the refinancing of the Shuweihat S2 power and water plant in the UAE setting a precedent for future non-recourse financing of UAE power stations. The company made significant disposals over the period, including non-core acreage in North America and the non-operated Noordgastransport B.V. pipeline business in the Netherlands. The company reported a net loss of AED 2.5 billion, affected by a one-off, non-cash impairment of AED 3.2 billion, mostly relating to the value of oil and gas holdings in North America. The impairment was realised as a result of a reduction in the long-term assumptions for natural gas prices in North America and is in line with recent write-downs by other natural gas producers in the region. The impairment does not affect the company's ability to continue operations or service its debt obligations. As a consequence of the net loss, the company will not pay a dividend for 2013. "TAQA has grown into Abu Dhabi's leading international operator of strategic national energy infrastructure. We achieved record levels of oil and gas production, while underlying revenues from our power and water business rose strongly. The company is well positioned to take advantage of the unique opportunities ahead. "Underlying revenues and cash flow rose year-on-year, while the net result was affected by a one-off, non-cash accounting entry. Our strong levels of liquidity enable us to continue to fund operations and service our debt obligations on favourable terms. Total revenues for 2013 were AED 25.8 billion, 7% lower year-on-year, compared with total revenues of AED 27.8 billion for the same period in 2012. However, this does not accurately reflect the underlying performance of the business, due to the effect of construction and backup fuel revenues which have compensating expenses in cost of sales. On an underlying basis, revenues grew by 3% to AED 21.1 billion in 2013 from AED 20.6 billion in 2012. This reflected a particularly strong performance from the power and water segment, which grew by 5% to AED 9.0 billion, from AED 8.5 billion in 2012, while the oil and gas segment grew by 1% to AED 12.2 billion in 2013. Cost of sales, excluding the impairment, was AED 17.9 billion in 2013, a decrease of 8% over last year. This was caused by lower construction costs and backup fuel costs corresponding to the fall in total revenue per accounts. Overall Gross Margin, excluding DD&A, dry hole expenses and impairment, was 56%, an increase from 51% in 2012, reflecting the stronger underlying performance of the business. Power & Water's performance was driven by 6% higher production within the domestic operation, despite the maintenance shutdown at Shuweihat S1 in H1. The international fleet also performed well, with Jorf Lasfar returning to production following an outage in the first half, achieving technical availability of 97% in Q4. Fuel revenue decreased 12% year-on-year to AED 3.2 billion, reflecting lower usage of back-up fuel in the domestic power plants. This revenue is the payment received from the off-taker and has a corresponding offset expense in fuel costs. Operating expenses for the power and water segment (excluding fuel costs) were AED 3.4 billion in 2013, compared to AED 5.5 billion in 2012. Depreciation, depletion and amortisation (DD&A) expense for the period was essentially flat at AED 1.8 billion. Net profit for the period amounted to AED 2.4 billion, compared to AED 2.2 billion in the prior year. Total oil and gas revenues (including gas storage and other income) increased by 1% to AED 12.2 billion for 2013. This was despite the shut-in of production at the Cormorant Alpha platform in the North Sea at the beginning of the year and lower UK prices. These factors were offset by the additional capacity acquired in the UK at the end of June, and higher production and higher prices in North America and the Netherlands. Operating expenses increased year-on-year to AED 5.0 billion, as costs rose in the North Sea due to the Cormorant Alpha shutdown, the Central North Sea asset acquisition and one-off projects, offset by lower operating expenses in the Netherlands and North America. In line with the increasing production during the second half, in particular at the UK operations as a result of the acquisition of Central North Sea assets, the DD&A expense increased to AED 4.4 billion. Net loss for the period was AED 2.1 billion, compared to a profit of AED 394 million in 2012. EBITDA grew by 1% to AED 13.4 billion in 2013 reflecting the strong underlying cash flows of the business and ensuring the company has more than sufficient liquidity to meet its financing needs. Financing costs were broadly consistent year-on-year at AED 5.1 billion. The Loss Before Tax was AED 1.1 billion in 2013, compared to a AED 3.5 billion Profit Before Tax in 2012. This was due to the effect of an impairment of TAQA's North American assets described below. The annual assessment of the assumptions on which TAQA's asset base is booked on the balance sheet, resulted in a pre-tax, non-cash impairment of AED 3.2 billion against TAQA's North American assets. Post-tax this is AED 2.7 billion. This was due to reserve revisions and lower anticipated production resulting from a better understanding of our holdings in North America, which has given us an enhanced view of economic recoverability, in the context of continued, industry-wide, low gas price environment. The impairment charge is non-cash and has no impact on TAQA's ability to meet its obligations, including the service of its ongoing debt obligations. In line with the overall reduction in profitability, TAQA reported a lower income tax expense of AED 661 million compared to AED 2.2 billion in 2012. Note that the impairment charge discussed above includes a goodwill impairment of AED 1.6 billion that is not deductible for tax purposes. Adjusted for this, the overall income tax expense for 2013 resulted in an effective tax rate of 135% (62% in 2012). The effective tax rate increased primarily as a result of the fact that our overall loss on the Oil and Gas segment consists of larger losses in North America with a statutory tax rate between 25% and 35%, and profits in the Netherlands and UK with statutory tax rates between 50% up to 81%. TAQA reported a net loss of AED 2.5 billion attributable to equity holders in 2013, compared to AED 649 million profit in 2012. On this basis, basic and diluted loss per share attributable to equity holders was AED 0.42, compared to AED 0.11 profit in the prior period. As a consequence of this loss, TAQA will not pay a dividend for 2013. Overall total debt was AED 79.7 billion, comprising non-recourse project finance debt tied to assets of AED 43 billion and corporate debt of AED36.7 billion. This is a marginal decrease of AED 95.5 million from 31 December 2012. This equates to a Net Debt /EBITDA ratio of 5.6x, a decrease from 5.8x in 2012. In July, a USD 825 million project bond was successfully issued to refinance the Shuweihat S2 plant. This bond carries a final maturity of 2036 and an attractive coupon of 6%. Consolidated cash on hand, as at 31 December 2013, was AED 3.9 billion, compared to AED 3.8 billion in December 2012. As with previous periods, liquidity remains very strong with unused credit lines available to TAQA of AED 11.0 billion, resulting in overall liquidity of AED 14.9 billion. In 2013, TAQA produced 76,712 Gigawatt hours (GWh) of electricity, a 2% increase over 2012, and 253.4 billion imperial gallons of water, a 5% increase over the prior year. Domestic power generation remained strong, increasing by 6% to 58,627 GWh of electricity and 525.4 million imperial gallons (MIG) of water during the twelve months to 31 December 2013. Domestic availability was 92.2%, compared to 95.2% the prior year. Technical availability was reduced due to a forced outage at Shuweihat S1, which affected one of the turbines in February. The affected turbine resumed operations at the end of June. The Fujairah 2 facility was also affected by a forced outage with one of its turbines affecting production in September. This was subsequently brought back online in October. These outages were significantly offset by the very strong performance of the rest of the UAE fleet, half of which reported an Equivalent Forced Outage Rate (EFOR) of less than 1%. In June, TAQA broke ground on the USD 200 million expansion of Fujairah 1's desalination capacity. The expansion, which uses reverse osmosis technology, will increase the facility's capacity by 30 MIG per day. In October, TAQA inaugurated a major new power and water plant in the Western Region of Abu Dhabi. Shuweihat S2 added 1,510 megawatts to the Emirate's generation capacity, enough to power more than 300,000 homes. The plant will also produce up to 100 MIG of potable water each day, representing 15 % of Abu Dhabi's water desalination capacity. TAQA's international power portfolio, which comprises assets in Morocco, Ghana, India, Saudi Arabia, Oman and the United States, generated 18,085 GWh of power during 2013. Overall technical availability fell during the period to 89.3%, compared to 91.4% last year. This was due to a steam turbine rotor failure at Red Oak, a transformer failure at Jorf Lasfar during the first half of the year, as well as a planned 28 day maintenance shut down at Neyveli. These issues were quickly addressed and all operations have now returned to normal. Indeed, downtime at Jorf Lasfar was used to bring forward significant maintenance and in the second half, the plant out-performed, achieving record availability of 97% - a level of performance equivalent to that of a gas-fired power plant. The expansion project in Morocco continued to progress well, with the first of the two new units, Unit 5, successfully commissioned in December and Unit 6 expected to be commissioned in April 2014. The 700 MW expansion will bring the gross capacity of the Jorf Lasfar plant to 2,056 MW. Jorf Lasfar also successfully completed its Initial Public Offering of Shares (IPO) on the Casablanca Stock Exchange, selling a 14.21% stake and raising proceeds of AED 673 million for TAQA. The expansion project at the Takoradi 2 plant in Ghana is also making good progress and is now 70% complete. This expansion will increase the installed capacity of Takoradi 2 to 330 MW and is expected to be commissioned in early 2015. Offsetting the increase, other expenses were down, such as gas entry capacity and movement charges in the Netherlands operations. Total average daily production for 2013 increased to 142,400 boed, compared with 135,700 boed in the same period last year. TAQA exited the year with record levels of production during Q4 2013 of 161.8 mboed. During 2013, TAQA undertook a significant structural reorganisation aimed at maximising efficiencies and positioning the business to become a leading intermediate energy company in North America. As part of this process, overall staff count was reduced by 162, whilst delivering the same activity through a simpler organisation. Many of these employees have been redeployed to TAQA's global operations, principally in the Kurdistan region of Iraq. This programme is contributing to the bottom line, with an approximate annual saving of AED 100 million in general and administrative costs and AED 20 million reduction in operating expense. At the same time, production increased safely and reliably to 87,200 boed from 86,200 boed. Since the initiation of non-core acreage disposals in 2012, the programme has yielded AED 1.9 billion. Production grew by 12% year-on-year, to 47,000 boed, with production levels boosted by the acquisition of new assets in the Central North Sea. The Harding, Maclure, Morrone and Devenick fields are performing well and contribute approximately 15,000 boed of additional production. In Q4, UK production levels were a record 68,400 boed, compared with 39,500 boed during the same period in 2012, an increase of 73%. The shut-in at Cormorant Alpha depressed production in the first half. Limited production at the platform restarted in June and full production resumed in August. Since then, Cormorant Alpha has been producing at high levels. In December, TAQA received approval from the UK Government for development of its Morrone field (block 9/23b) in the Central North Sea. The initial phase of development will consist of an extended reach well drilled from the TAQA-operated Harding platform. Morrone is expected to initially produce over 3,000 barrels of oil equivalent per day with first oil expected in Q3 2014. In January, first oil production came on line from the Cormorant East field, which is estimated to contain 10 to 30 million barrels of oil in place. During 2013, the UK Government approved the development plan for Cladhan. This is expected to produce over 17,000 boed initially, with first oil expected Q1 2015. This is the third and largest field that TAQA has developed to date and is a cornerstone of TAQA's strategy of investing to maximise recovery in the North Sea. Production in the Netherlands continued to improve, increasing to 8,200 boed, 6% higher than the same period last year. This was driven by the acceleration of Groet-Oost production near Alkmaar and a strong performance from the P15 and P18 and offshore partner-operated fields, as well as higher flow rates at L11-A08. Construction at TAQA's flagship gas storage facility at Bergermeer continues to progress well, with phase one operations scheduled to begin in mid-2014 and full start-up in 2015. In November, TAQA sold its stake in Noordgastransport B.V., a non-operated pipeline business in the Netherlands. In August, TAQA and its partners announced that they had drilled an additional test well at Atrush and were conducting an analysis of core samples, including appraisal of oil/water contact definition, oil gravity/viscosity variations, extent of quality reservoir, permeability and porosity data. In October, TAQA received approval from the Kurdistan Regional Government for the first phase in the development of the Atrush Block in the Kurdistan region of Iraq. The block, which is located 85 km northwest of Erbil, is expected to initially produce approximately 30,000 boed, with first oil by early 2015. The approval covers a 25 year period to maximise recovery of the oil resources. In total, TAQA is expecting to invest more than USD 300 million in the initial phase which will consist of three production wells and a central processing facility. Global oil prices strengthened during the course of 2013, as. WTI averaged USD 98.04 per barrel (bbl), 4% above the average of USD 94.15/bbl a year earlier. The WTI/Brent pricing differential continued, although narrowing, with Brent averaging USD 108.70/bbl in 2013 versus USD 111.68/bbl in 2012. NYMEX gas prices for 2013 averaged USD 3.73 (mmbtu), versus USD 2.83 for the equivalent period in 2012. During Q3, the Alberta AECO differential to NYMEX gas widened as the TransCanada mainline pipeline toll increase discouraged gas flows from leaving Alberta. This basis is expected to narrow as the winter gas firm contracting season begins in the fall. Longer term, the North American natural gas price environment is expected to continue to improve, as infrastructure to transport gas comes on stream and as the price differential between gas and other energy sources is arbitraged. In March 2014, a consortium led by TAQA agreed to acquire the Baspa Stage II and Karcham Wangtoo hydroelectric plants in the northern Indian state of Himachal Pradesh, from Jaiprakash Power Ventures Limited. The two plants have a combined power generation capacity of 1,391 megawatts (MW). TAQA, holds a 51% stake in the consortium and will have control of operations and management of both facilities under the proposed deal. Following the completion of the transaction, TAQA's gross operational power generation capacity in India will be 1,741 MW, comprising one lignite power plant and three hydroelectric plants, making TAQA the largest private operator of hydroelectric plants in India. Teresa and I like to go to the cinema at least once a week, specifically on weekends. But lately, the act has become nearly impossible due to the lack of quality films being released. Last Friday rolled around, and we clicked through our Flixster app and (other than the already sold-out Wes Anderson film at Film Streams), the choices were Divergent, Muppets Most Wanted, Mr. Peabody & Sherman, The Lego Movie, 300: Rise of an Empire, Need for Speed. Seriously. If the choice is between seeing any of those or getting some Indian take-out and staying home to catch up on the DVR or Netflix, well, it’s pretty simple. I know it’s become popular these days to call this the “Golden Age of Television,” but the fact is most of the stuff on the major networks is as shitty as anything I remember watching on the tube growing up in the ‘80s; maybe more so when you consider “reality television” and garbage like The Real Housewives of… or whatever shitpool the Kardashians are wading through this week (Let me add my voice to the countless that came before me and ask how any of the Kardashians became “stars.” What talent, skill or wisdom made them anything other than shining examples of how to be human garbage?). And yet, there’s all these TV shows that are hands-down better than anything in the theaters: House of Cards, Game of Thrones, Girls, The Newsroom, Downton Abbey and the show I’m currently re-watching on HBO On Demand: True Detective. True Detective is the best television show I’ve seen in years, and an example of the kind of thing that could only be seen on television. Over the course of eight one-hour episodes, we not only see the evolution of an investigation of grisly, ritualistic serial killings that span two decades, but the emotional rise and fall of two central characters, played by the irascible Woody Harrelson and the ever-changing Matthew McConaughey, who’s currently enjoying the best “second act” of any Hollywood star. True Detective combines the eeriness of Silence of the Lambs with the long-form character development of The Sopranos. You simply cannot tell this kind of story in a movie theater. The choice would be to either cut the series down to two hours and remove all the elements that make it special, or break it into three parts and release it over three years (which would never work since the show contains no elves or laser beams) or force audiences to sit in the dark for eight straight hours (which, in this case, isn’t a bad option). Or air it on HBO or Netflix or whatever cable and/or Internet-based service you prefer. I say all this and then you counter with American Hustle or 12 Years a Slave or Dallas Buyers Club. But those films, which clearly target an adult audience, are becoming rare amidst the plethora of adolescent bullshit that clogs today’s marquees. Hollywood’s answer to that criticism is that kids go to the movies, kids are where the money is, and that the grown-ups are more apt to do what grown-ups do: Stay home with their Indian take-out and watch Netflix. I can’t argue with that. Still, on a Friday or Saturday night I’d rather be sitting in the dark with a few hundred people taking it all in with a picture that’s bigger than life, and without the option of pressing the pause button when I have to go to the bathroom. My editor (not John Heaston, but Teresa, who reads everything before I submit it to The Reader) pointed out that Film Streams is the exception to the Hollywood rule, and she's right (as per usual). Since Film Streams' Ruth Sokolof Theater opened in 2007, it has consistently shown quality adult-oriented films and continues to be the obvious alternative to the usual superhero/zombie/coming-of-age bullshit shown at the multiplexes. We would have seen The Grand Budapest Hotel (now showing exclusively at Film Streams) last weekend except screenings were sold out by the time we made up our minds. Film Streams also might be evidence of the cinema-viewing age gap. When it first opened as part of The Slowdown complex, I expected the average audience at screenings to be dominated by young midtown and downtown hipsters, the kind of folks I typically run into at indie rock shows. Instead, it's not uncommon for Teresa and I to be the youngest people in the audience. I wonder if that's what Film Streams’ visionary founder, Rachel Jacobson, expected when the theater's curtains first parted. An update on my DuoLingo column from a few weeks ago: I’ve finally given up on the iPhone app that approaches learning to speak a foreign language as if it were just another game like Words with Friends or Candy Crush. After four months, I made it as far as Level 8 and “Object Pronouns” before I began to fall further and further behind, unable to make it through lessons without “running out of hearts,” the app’s wise old owl teacher ever in tears at my failures, all the while forgetting what little I’d learned in earlier lessons. The game went from being a fun diversion to being a constant reminder of how stupid I am, how I’m doomed never to speak Spanish. The idea behind DuoLingo was too good to be true. Still, the experience left me with that much more respect for those I meet from another land stumbling through our own foreign language. Corey Roadcap on the ice in Barrow, Alaska. It was zero degrees the first day of Corey Roadcap's spring break north of the Arctic Circle. During his two-week stay, that was about the warmest it got. On the Arctic Ocean where he worked with an 18-person polar ice research team from Radford University, the New Market resident measured the effects of surface temperature on the thickness of polar sea ice in northern Alaska. What he found is pretty scary, he said. "Just from what we have looked at, there seems to be a correlation," he said. The team could see how their readings differed from those that another Radford team found two years ago. And the results from 10 years ago were even more striking. In 2004, the open water by Barrow, Alaska -- 320 miles north of the Arctic Circle -- started about eight miles out from the land. Now, it starts at a mile and a half, Roadcap said. "For the most part, they have noticed a large climate change from a decade ago," he said. A senior double majoring in computer science and physics at Radford, Roadcap, 22, has been looking forward to the trip he said the school has offered every two years for the last decade. Under the direction of his physics advisor, Dr. Rhett Herman, it's "a unique opportunity to travel to the Arctic Circle," Roadcap said. "It was beautiful. Everything was covered with ice. If it wasn't ice, it was permafrost. Unlike other parts of Alaska, there were no mountains. "It was very flat," he remembered. "Obviously it was very cold. In Barrow the hours of light and dark are about equal this time of year, but Roadcap said the sun doesn't travel the way it does here. The sky starts to lighten at 7 a.m., but the sun doesn't make its appearance over the horizon for at least two more hours. "So dawn and dusk are really elongated," he said. With a population of about 4,000, Barrow features raised homes that look like beach houses. And the roads, he said, "They're ice roads, for the most part. "During the summer, all the ice melts and it just turns into a bunch of pot holes," he said. When it's warm enough, the residents can drive out of town, but in general, they travel by plane. Roadcap stayed with 10 other people in a three-bedroom, furnished hut in an old Navy research facility built after WWII and donated to the National Science Foundation. Most of his team came for either the first week or the second, but he and two other students stayed for the duration with their professors. On the Arctic Ocean where their research was focused on drilling into the ice, it was negative 47 degrees. Asked how he dressed, he said, "Um, thick." -- Wool socks, sweatpants, undershirt, "and my negative-40 gear on top of that," which he rented from the school. To avoid misreading the ice thickness in places of shade, the team learned to trek out onto the ice early in the morning before the sun rose. While there they met other researchers -- a member of the U.S. Army's Cold Regions Research Engineering Labs, one from the National Oceanic and Atmospheric Administration, a faculty member from the University of Washington Applied Physics Laboratory and students from the Naval Academy in Annapolis, Md., doing the same sort of tests Roadcap was doing. "The first day we went out and drilled in a few spots just to get an idea of how deep the ice was and found it was only a meter or a meter and a half thick. It was a lot thinner than we expected," Roadcap said. Scary enough for researchers, he said Barrow residents offered a different perspective on the ocean's receding ice. "That was very surprising, and the locals we talked to, this is the closest they've seen the open water at this time of year," he said. The team members returned from Alaska Sunday and will start analysis on their data. Planning to pursue physics or another career field related to science after graduating in May, Roadcap said he's glad for this experience. "I wish we never left. It was great. I had a blast," he said. "I definitely want to work, maybe not that far north, but I wouldn't mind working with ice again. That would be cool. Discover The Most ... Print this We have had some great days this month, it actually stopped raining which was perfect for the Big Towpath clean up day. Over 30 people answered our call to arms and turned out to get mucky litter picking, filling muddy potholes and puddles, cutting back unruly trees and shrubs and planting dozens of sweet berry bushes so there will be lots of juicy fruit to share in the summer. The day was a joint effort with Todmorden Rotary Club, The Canals and Rivers Trust and Incredible Edible all working together to make a difference to a little bit of our town. We were all rewarded with an incredible lunch of wonderful sandwiches of all kinds made for us by Hilary of “Three Valley Vegans” and there was a wonderful vegetable pie made especially for the day by Tod’s renowned pie man Tony from the market hall’s Ham Corner. We weren’t allowed to pay - such a lovely act of kindness, thank you Tony for your very tasty generosity. Refreshments were provided by the “Chai Guys” who served authentic Indian chai made with their own special blend of tea and spices from the chai caravan. They really added that little bit extra to the day. Another act of kindness came from James Campbell the new CEO of the famous Garden Organic. James drove up from Coventry to meet us and brought lots of heritage seeds from their seed bank for us. RED BANK — Business recruitment, retention and promotion will be top priorities for Red Bank RiverCenter in 2014, as borough officials and commercial property owners seek to address a lingering vacancy problem in Red Bank’s downtown. RiverCenter’s $512,000 budget, introduced to the public during the March 12 Borough Council meeting, will fund a number of new marketing and outreach campaigns aimed at attracting new interest from throughout the region, according to River- Center Director James Scavone. “I think our strategy really has to be multifaceted,” Scavone said in a March 18 interview, referring to the downtown’s estimated 6 percent vacancy rate. “What we are trying to do is to reach out as far as possible. The proposed budget allocates $15,450 directly for business recruitment and an additional $30,500 for marketing and advertising. Administration costs and overhead account for $226,875 of the budget, which Scavone said marks a $30,000 reduction over last year. The savings, along with nearly $106,000 in grants, sponsorships and other funds collected outside of the budget, will go directly into programs and services to help promote the town and improve the downtown business district. While expanding existing business-recruitment strategies and generating new digital-marketing materials for potential businesses, Scavonne said RiverCenter is currently analyzing the way it approaches companies to seek out more effective methods. “I’m sure some of these companies get hundreds of letters and requests,” he said. “So we’re looking at how we reach out and how internally we can improve that process. Following the budget proposal last week, a number of council members lauded RiverCenter for working to address the downtown’s vacancy rate, which Scavone said sat at nearly 11 percent only a few years ago. “We are decreasing our vacancy rate and helping reduce our taxes by providing a vibrant business community, but also providing a more cultural and safe neighborhood for us,” Councilman Michael DuPont said. “We have become a very great town because of the cooperation between our business community and our government. Councilwoman Cindy Burnham, remarking on RiverCenter’s creative “camouflaging” of empty storefronts during the holiday season, asked Scavone if similar work could be done throughout the rest of the year. Scavone said a plan is already in the works. “We are looking into designing some kind of window covering that would be the same in every store, but that would promote the town and still look nice,” he said. “That is on our list. While the downtown still boasts a strong restaurant and hospitality scene, Scavone said RiverCenter is attempting to recruit a wide range of other businesses to Red Bank, particularly those that would serve local residents. In general, RiverCenter’s board mem- bers have expressed interest in recruiting housewares and home-furnishings businesses, a small hardware store, clothing shops and other locally driven businesses, Scavone said. “Obviously, we can’t exclude somebody from coming to Red Bank just because we think it’s a good idea or not,” Scavonne said. “But within that, there definitely are certain types of businesses that we would like to target, that are either missing or that we think we could use. RiverCenter, which is funded by a special levy on participating commercial property owners, was formed in 1991 to help address a 35 percent vacancy rate in the downtown district. By 2006, the vacancy rate had dropped to 3 percent, according to RiverCenter officials, but the economic downturn in late 2008 forced a wave of business closures and relocations in the years since. Scavone said the vacancy rate is close to 6 percent this year, but it is trending downward. While economics have played a significant role in the downtown’s troubles, businesses relocate or close for a variety of reasons, Scavone added. Some tenants have complained of parking issues, while others have recently chosen to retire or close up shop to be with their families, he said. Problems with elevated rents in Red Bank, which were widely reported by some prospective and former tenants a number of years ago, have largely been resolved, Scavone said. “I don’t think rents are as much of an issue as they once were,” he said. “When the economic crisis happened, landlords, I think, were very realistic. They work hard to keep their tenants, if possible. In addition to recruitment, Scavone said RiverCenter is working to generate new visitor traffic for local businesses, as well. Together with the Red Bank Visitor’s Center, RiverCenter will use more than $26,000 in state grants and partner contributions this year to roll out a new advertising campaign in New York and Philadelphia designed to attract a new wave of interest in the borough. RiverCenter has also scheduled a new food and music festival for June 28-29 in Marine Park. Without an official name as of last week, Scavone said the fest will be geared toward country music, featuring beer and wine, alongside edible offerings from Red Bank restaurants. The budget also allocates $95,000 for capital improvements throughout the town, including upgrades to sidewalks and landscaping. Scavone said one such project will remove the rock wall adjacent to the monuments at Borough Hall and replace it with new benches and landscaping. The public hearing on RiverCenter’s proposed budget will be held on April 9.
