Last week's sale of a small Akron-area bank has experts sizing up which banks -- including some names you don't recognize -- may expand or move in to Northeast Ohio for the first time. Banking analyst Jeff Davis of Mercer Capital in Nashville believes the new trend will be two small banks locking arms, as occurred when Westfield Bank of Medina County bought Valley Savings of Cuyahoga Falls last week. The two together, at about $1 billion in assets combined, will be a little smaller than First Federal of Lakewood. "The small banks are more burdened by the more difficult regulatory environment," said banking analyst Fred Cummings of Elizabeth Park Capital Management in Pepper Pike. "Their profitability will be constrained. Two small banks can combine and benefit by reducing their costs and complementing the services they can offer together, Davis said. He predicts we'll see more small banks getting purchased by other small banks, rather than by larger banks. Cummings said that the costs of new regulations imposed since the financial meltdown will make it challenging for many banks under $2 billion in assets to survive. Of the roughly 40 banks operating in Greater Cleveland, fewer than a dozen exceed $2 billion in assets. Banking analyst Terry McEvoy of Oppenheimer & Co. in Maine said there is "a pent-up demand" for bank-buying because there were almost no purchases for three or four years during the banking crisis. While the crisis is over now, the recovery has been slow. People just aren't borrowing and spending like they used to. So since banks are struggling to increase loan volume and profits on their own, the way to do it quickly is to buy another bank, McEvoy said. McEvoy expects to see both small banks combining, and larger banks buying smaller banks. "It seems the stars are lined up for this period of bank consolidation," he said. Park National Corp. 125 branches in Ohio and Kentucky. $6.5 billion in assets. Financial strength rated as four stars out of five. Last year bought Citizens Republic Bancorp of Flint, Mich., making FirstMerit the 26th-largest bank in the nation with 415 offices in five states and $24 billion in assets.
